"Door County" Get Away

It's our first family blog! What better time to start than with our most recent "family togetherness" event. Tyler will be turning 12 tomorrow and so we traveled to Northern Door County, on the peninsula of Wisconsin that juts out into Lake Michigan, to celebrate his big day. We stayed at a resort in Sturgeon Bay. It was right on the waterfront to the bay and the kids had a great time exploring the shore. We were even able to take paddle boats out for a spin!

The next day was warm and sunny--which is unusual for an Autumn day up North! We spent our day at Whitefish Dunes on Lake Michigan and reveled in the sun all day. The combination of sun, sand and surf somehow relaxes, rejuvenates and invites euphoria! Unanimously voted our best family vacation day in 3 years!

Our final day turned cool and cloudy. We visited the Cana Island Lighthouse and explored some more coastline. The kids were freezing, but still managed to climb out on the rocky shore and get soaked in the waves.

It was also the perfect day for a nature hike in Potawatomi State Park. The forest was rife with changing leaves...beautiful! We climbed the observation tower in the park for some jaw dropping views of the bay.

Kids say the funniest things! I think every family has a funniest moment of the day. We have two from the trip home that we'll share. Both originate from Olivia! At one point Olivia was naughty and I took away all treats for an hour (you know how important treats are on road trips?). She was so mad at me she said, "I'm going to unstwrap out of my booster seat, get out of the cawr and ... and go live in the woods!"
Trevor and I both have a bad habit of talking out loud to other nutty drivers on the road. It's nothing coarse, just vocal questioning of the other drivers motives or capabilities. At one point Trevor said, "This guy is driving me crazy. He keeps speeding up and slowing down. I can't follow him." Olivia replies with, "What is he? A punk?" That's pretty colorful language for a five year old. We're not sure where she learned it...seriously!

I wouldn't start to worry unless Olivia says "Do you feel lucky, punk? Well? Do you?"
